Running for Congress

Sometimes asked whether I would consider seeking federal office, the answer now is “yes.” After much consideration, study, and prayer, I am running for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2024.

Why?

I founded Principle Based Politics in 2021 with a mission to spread the idea of principles over tribalism, partisanship, extremism, and polarization, with the right principles leading to reasonable, rational policies that will help the American people. The goal was to bring voters better alternatives to the extreme positions and divisive candidates seen in the 2020 elections (and since then). My vision was to promote leadership principles like integrity, peace, and dignity; to espouse publicly the virtues of freedom, limited government, equality, transparency, etc.; and to advocate for principled issue positions and use of principle-based processes.

Having spent three years blogging about principles and politics, it has become clear that the most effective way to promote this mission actually may be by running for office myself. Doing so would provide two benefits: (1) a forum for reaching larger audiences about the desperate need for positive, principled politics in America; and (2) an opportunity to demonstrate in real time how principles can be used by our federal leaders and candidates. Running also could force other candidates away from the extremes and toward more moderate, sensible views.

To help spread the idea of principled leadership and governance, to positively influence the political thought process, and to provide voters an alternative type of candidate, I am running for the Republican nomination for the U.S. House representing Minnesota’s Third Congressional District, which covers many of the suburbs of Minneapolis. The seat currently is held by Dean Phillips, a Democrat, who is running for President of the United States and has announced that – win or lose the race for the White House – he will not be coming back to his current position in Congress.

Why Run as a Republican?

My impression is that the Republican Party, particularly in our congressional district, may be more open to endorsing and nominating a candidate like me. Historical values of the Grand Old Party – such as freedom, free enterprise, limited government, law and justice, religious freedom, and good government generally – are principles I share and would like to see emphasized more today, including within the Republican Party.

My Theory and Style

One thing I strongly believe is that a political leader should encourage rational, principled ideas regardless of which “side” suggested them. We have had enough of the political fighting between the parties. Neither one has a monopoly on ideas for truly helping America, and followers of both share many of the same priorities, really. I think most proud, patriotic Americans are caught somewhere in the political middle. Americans also want servant leaders who are honest, full of integrity, desire peace and respect for our country, treat others with dignity, and seek to understand issues before speaking and acting.

With a background of being born on a farm, residing in small towns, later living in middle-tier suburbs, and working from an office in the heart of a large Midwestern city, I would follow middle class, middle America, solid roots and instincts. I would not use polling to determine what to believe. I would not rely on television ads — and certainly no negative advertising — to seek voter support. This will be a grassroots, positive campaign.

Our team will rely on and promote principles.

Here to serve,

  1. Why did you post an old picture of your dad running? The only way to succeed is to try. Give it your best shot.

    1. I guess I do look a lot like my dad did, but I’m okay with that. We are going to mobilize and lead the great “political middle” of our country.

  2. Best wishes for a successful campaign, Quentin. Congress could certainly use smart, rational people, such as yourself, who would work for the good of the country and be able to be effective in working across the aisle in addressing the real issues facing America. Those real issues having been shelved or totally disregarded, for many years, due to divisive political posturing by those more interested in their personal status and desire to hold on to power.
